From Using a Standard Deck of Cards to Playing Free Online Card Games

Remember that boring afternoon when you and your friends couldn’t think of a game to play? Then you saw a standard deck of cards, played the popular card games with your friends, and the rest is history. It has become your usual game whenever you meet. Fun times indeed! But now that we moved to the province and meeting friends is hard, I’ve got no one to play it with. Nope, the husband’s not interested. He’s more of an action RPG game fan. So, I moved on from playing physical card games to playing online games.

Before all these PC games, I’m pretty sure you’re familiar with minesweeper and the popular card game, Solitaire. I remember playing these even without the internet, but I’m not sure why they’re not installed by default here on my laptop. Thankfully, we can now play card games online for free. While searching for how to download a solitaire app, I discovered solitaire.org. It’s a free website where you can play free online games like Solitaire, Hidden Objects, Logic Puzzles, Word Games, and a lot more. I’ve tried three games so far. Also, I didn’t know that there were heaps of versions of Solitaire, so I bookmarked the site to check out the other versions when I have time.

Spider Solitaire

If you like to play solitaire but want a bit of a challenge, I suggest you play Spider Solitaire. It’s a two-deck version of the game where you have to assemble thirteen cards of a suit from King to Ace. Seems easy, right? But no, it’s not!

The cards are arranged randomly in ten piles of five cards each with the top cards turned face up. The goal is to stack the cards into sequences based on suit and rank. The top card in a pile can be moved to another card, provided they are in sequence. A sequence of cards can be moved at once as long as they are suited. I’ve played this several times but it is so hard that I just gave up. Luckily, if you get stuck, you can always go back and try again. How to win the game? Strategy and a lot of patience.

Logic Puzzles

There are several games under logic puzzles, but what instantly got my attention are Minesweeper and Sudoku. I never beat the minesweeper game, even before, but it’s still fun to play. I wonder when’s the time that I’ll finally uncover all squares without the bombs.

Of course, Sudoku. I bought Sudoku books before and this has been my go-to when I’m bored at home (especially when there’s no internet connection or when the power is out). So, imagine my surprise when I saw that this can be played online too, for free!

It’s a 9×9 grid of 81 squares, where each row, column, and 3×3 section should contain all of the digits between 1 to 9 only. There are numbers already given as a clue, and the job is to fill in the missing numbers in each box. But be careful, because if you entered an incorrect number, the rest of the numbers will have duplicates too. What’s great about the Sudoku game on solitaire.org is that you can play according to your experience level–easy, medium, hard, and expert. What’s more exciting is that there’s a timer! You can see how many minutes you’ve solved the game.

Crossword Puzzle

I’m also a fan of word games like Scrabble, Crossword, Boggle, etc. I remember buying newspapers mainly because I want to solve the daily crossword puzzle. Of course, read the news after. 😀

Solitaire.org offers a different crossword puzzle each day. But if you can’t solve the daily crossword, you can go back or forward up to 6 months to solve a new one, which I did because today’s game is a bit hard.

There are a lot more games worth mentioning on their website, but I haven’t tried them yet. These three are my favorites, so far. I’ll surely try the other games when I have time. Aside from entertainment, it’s good to play these kinds of games to challenge ourselves and exercise our brains to improve our memory, concentration, and focus.
