A Quiet Reminder About Eternity
Some phone calls are routine. Some are quick exchanges of information. But every once in a while, there is a call that stays with you long after the line goes silent—quietly reminding you of the hope of eternal life.
Recently, I received a call that broke my heart.
I was asked to call someone to get some information. It was supposed to be a simple conversation—something brief and practical. Toward the end of the call, I said the usual words we say to someone who is unwell: “Pagaling po kayo.”
I expected a polite “thank you” or maybe a hopeful response.
But the man replied quietly, “Naku, hindi na ako gagaling, iha. I have a stage 5 Kidney chronic disease and I’m dying. I’m in the hospital for dialysis, and I am now just waiting.”
Silence.
His words hit me like a wave. I felt my chest tighten and my eyes fill with tears. I didn’t know what to say. How do you respond to someone who has just told you they are just waiting to die?
I searched for the right words, but none seemed enough. I didn’t want to say something empty or careless, I wanted to tell him about Jesus and salvation. But nothing came out of my mouth but a silent sob. The conversation ended simply with me telling him that I would pass on his message to the person who extended support—that he was grateful.
When the call ended, I sat quietly, thinking about what had just happened.
That moment reminded me of something we often try to avoid thinking about: death is a reality for every one of us. No matter how young or old we are, no matter how healthy we seem, our lives on earth are temporary.
But the Bible tells us that death is not the end of the story.

Eternity and Salvation
For many people, the thought of death brings fear and uncertainty. Questions naturally come to mind: What happens next? Where will we go? Is there life after this one?
The Bible gives us hope and clarity. It tells us that our lives do not simply end when our bodies fail. There is eternity beyond this life.
For those who believe in Christ, there is hope of eternal life with God.
One of the most well-known verses in the Bible explains this promise clearly:
“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” — John 3:16
This verse reminds us of the incredible love of God. He loves us so much and knew we needed salvation, so He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to pay for our sins.
Eternal life is not something we can earn through our own goodness or achievements. The Bible explains that salvation is a gift from God.
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” — Ephesians 2:8–9
In other words, our salvation is not based on how perfect we are. It is based on God’s grace and our faith in Jesus Christ.
A Reminder About Life
That phone call made me realize how fragile life truly is.
We go through our days making plans, chasing goals, and thinking about tomorrow. Yet sometimes tomorrow is not guaranteed. For some people, like the man on the other end of the line, the reality of life’s end becomes very clear.
But the message of the Bible offers hope beyond that reality.
For those who place their faith in Jesus Christ, death is not the final destination—it is a doorway to eternity with God.
A Question for All of Us
After that call, I kept thinking about one question: Are we ready for eternity?
The good news is that God has already made a way. Through Jesus Christ, anyone can receive forgiveness, new life, and the promise of eternity with Him.
Sometimes God uses unexpected moments to remind us of eternal truths. For me, it was a quiet phone call with someone who said he was “just waiting.”
But even in moments like that, the message of the gospel remains the same: there is hope beyond this life, and that hope is found in Christ.
